The identification of ‘I’ and ‘Gospel’

"I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel...” (10:29)

Jesus continued his reply, saying, ‘for me and the gospel’ and so on. Here comes the list items and family members as objects of leaving: home, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children and fields. There is no wife and husband in this list. According to other text, ‘wife’ comes after father. Variation in the sequence of items of list in different test shows that the accuracy of such list cannot be ascertained until a certain time has come.

However, according to this list of items in Jesus’ reply, we have to leave everything. No one can observe and regard this word unless we leave home like a monk. There could be two possible interpretations with regard to this list. First, it is applicable to the Disciples only. Second, if it is applicable to others too then this list is not an actual but a symbolic. Which one has higher possibility? It is a little complicated matter.

Including this problem, the above verse contains the further basic problem that “Is it really spoken by Jesus in person?” It was not quite a natural thing that Jesus who struggled with the Pharisees and lived friendly with the sinners and tax collectors had to say ‘leave everything’.

Especially the paragraph ‘for me and gospel’ is remarkable. The identification ‘me’ and ‘gospel’ here was the religious confession that could be thinkable quite long time later of Jesus’ resurrection. It is not much a serious matter though it has a time difference. It is because a clue of gospel has already begun through Jesus’ teaching, activity, the incident and destiny. Yes. Christian faith is rightly founded on the fact that Jesus and gospel is one.
