The rich and the kingdom of God (4)

The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?" (Mark 10:26)

The disciples were even more amazed at the teaching of Jesus who says, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God". The degree of amazement this particular verse gives is higher than the one that verse 24 does. They were ‘even more amazed’. They added, “Who then can be saved?”

In those days the rich was recognized by the people and they were considered more blessed than the poor. In this case, they should be saved ahead of the poor. Such fixed idea was greatly challenged by Jesus’ teaching. Now their idea should be corrected by accepting Jesus’ teaching as it is. However, it was not easy. They wondered that there would not be even a single rich man ready to give up the idea to be rich. This could be a misunderstanding of Jesus’ word. The more important thing was they were not able to get over their preconception.

We are also not much different from this. We are living in a situation where we are captured by a various types of preconceptions. I do not feel the necessity to explain all these in detail. If I say a word in a big frame it could be our idea that we would be happy once we enter into the main stream. The idea like good educational carrier, social status and property are proportioned to the satisfaction of life that completely dominates person and society. More fundamentally it is a preconception about life.

The disciples added this question not because of their lack of personality and faith. The epigram that you can see is what you know. They gave their best answer in their spiritual level. They were helpless that they were not able to see beyond that point despite their best effort.
